Another Mogwai album’s out, it’ll be all quiet then loud guitars, there’ll be little singing, some sampled dialogue, and all the tracks will last about ten minutes, it’s their “trademark sound”.

As sadly seems so often then case, loss is so repeatedly the inspiration for great art. Carrier, the latest album by The Dodos is such a creative work, influenced and inspired by the loss of friend, collaborator, and the bands’ on tour second guitarist, Christopher Reimer. The album is both littered with references to their late friend and, with singer/guitarist Meric Long insisting that Reimer had such a profound effect on his approach to song-writing, then perhaps it is impossible to escape the added poignancy that playing these songs in his absence brings.

What could be better than finding out that perennial cracklefeedback favourites have a new long player for us all to devour? Getting a copy and finding it’s a double album of course.

Hitherto unknown to me, The Dodos have been steadily amassing a sizeable catalogue of work since forming in 2005 - Carrier recently released on the Polyvinyl Record Co. label, being their 5th full album release. The band is primarily the preserve of San Franciscans Meric Long and Logan Kroeber – singer/guitarist and drummer/percussionist respectively, though for live work they often add a third member to the mix with multi-instrumental responsibilities.

The Love Language have (or maybe has) travelled quite some distance since 2008’s eponymous debut. Begun as a one-man-band, though perhaps never even intended as that, Stuart McLamb found himself first without his band, and then his girlfriend, whereupon he decamped to his parents’ house and began putting together a number of cathartic homespun demos, never really meant to be heard by the world, but which eventually spawned a self-produced first album.

The second release by the Real Estate bassist Alex Bleeker’s other band / project / creative outlet (following 2009’s self-titled debut), is a largely easy-going and unfussy affair. There’s something pleasingly home-made about it, whether engineered or unintentional or, perhaps maybe it was recorded at home, but either way it’s homely, and that adds to its charm.

Seeing Neil Halstead and his bands play live is a wonderful thing. His songs, simply put, are enchantingly beautiful – anyone who’s heard Palindrome Hunches will know this and, without a doubt, the few times I’ve seen them so far, they make a superb fist of playing them live.

Dead gaze is the musical nom de guerre of Cole Furlow, Mississippi resident and member of the Cats Purring Art Collective - a slew of music-makers native to that locale. Active under the Dead Gaze name since 2009, Furlow is the owner of a prolific back catalogue, having released numerous cassettes and records across various labels – and this is the material from which the tracks on this eponymous compilation of an album are drawn (alongside some new unheard ones).

It’s been a fair wait since we heard the joys of the hopeful The Winter Of Mixed Drinks - three years in fact. There’s been a couple of EPs, both offering wonderful ideas, but not so much the coherent full picture a long player hopes to unravel before it’s audience.

First off, a mention for Novella, second support act of the night and incumbents of those “ones to watch” lists that, importantly, happen to be right on this one. London-based all-girl three-piece (with added drummer for the night?), they make a great noise - it’s got elements of indie-drone, shoegaze and stoner-rock in its composition, but with a swagger not so readily associated with such influences and there’s something of a Velvet Underground like exoticism too in the ebb and swell of what they do.
