Broken Record #2

Sweet Baboo

Stephen Black has got his fingers in many pies, and delicious pies at that. Not content with his own solo project Sweet Baboo, Black has also collaborated regularly with Cate Le Bon and is sporadically touring the world with the equally amazing Slow Club. After 3 albums Sweet Baboo released the acclaimed Girl Under A Tree EP last year and will follow it up in 2012 with a new album tentatively titled Ships. On a rare break from a hectic schedule the welsh wonder takes us through some of the records that make him tick. Girl Under A Tree and a whole load of other excellent Sweet Baboo albums are available from

Under-rated Album

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - How I Long

My favourite favourite band, I could have chosen any one of their albums, but, as we're getting close to summer, I thought I'd choose this one. It's the perfect pop album full of heartbreak, melody, harmony and it never fails to make me and my friends smile.
Over-rated Album

Radiohead - OK Computer

I know this is an obvious choice. I'll admit, I loved Radiohead when I was fifteen, I even wanted to look like Tom Yorke, circa “1996-Jools Holland” and wore yellow tinted sunglasses (from Fosters ) and died my hair a weird orange but this album has dated real bad, and worse still it spawned so many shit bands - Coldplay, Starsailor, Doves, Muse, Elbow, Gomez, Keane, Snow Patrol, off the top of my head. You can add Jeff Buckley Grace to that list too.
Album Of Sin

Britney Spears - Femme Fatale

I have no idea what the album sounds like but the song Till the World Ends, which according to Wikipedia is on this album, is the best party tune ever!
Album of Joy

Neutral Milk Hotel - In An Aeroplane Over The Sea / Olivia Tremor Control - Dusk at Cubist Castle

After five years of solidly listening to both these albums (and I know they sound very different) they never fail to make me smile. I didn't want to choose one over the other.
Surprising Album

Rocket from The Crypt - Scream Dracula Scream

I wasn't quite sure what was meant by this category but maybe people would be surprised that I love this album. I don't know why they'd think this though, it's very good.
