Haiku Salut are Gemma Barkerwood, Louise Croft and Sophie Barkerwood and last year they were commissioned to compose the score to Buster Keaton's 1926 masterpiece, The General. The band have been gradually teasing tracks from the resulting 23 track double album, and "Firewood" is the latest offering. It's an uplifting piece which straddles the line between low-key and orchestral, gradually building up the layers into something that is undeniably cinematic. I'd be interested to see how this fits with an almost-century old silent comedy and I believe the only way to see the two together (unless you want to sync them up yourself at home) is to go and see it performed live, but as a standalone track it's another wonderful moment which will solidify Haiku Salut's reputation as one of the UK's leading lights in electronica.
“The General” is released on Aug 2nd via Secret Name, you can order it here.
You can see Haiku Salut perform a live score to The General at The Y Theatre in Leicester on 18th December 2019 (tickets here).
